Como to Breck Via Boreas Pass
Under near ideal conditions, 56 runners started out in the 2001 version of the Como to Breckenridge 20-mile run. The field included several top trail and ultra runners including both the men and women's 2nd place finishers in this year's Leadville 100 mile Trail Race, Hal Koerner and Jill Case; Scott Hajicek, record holder on the old Como course, 2:04:31 in 1990; Tania Pacev, 4th place woman at the White River 50-mile National Trail Championships earlier this summer; and Mark Werner, 3rd at the Vail Evergold 10k the day before.

Mary's Loop 8M Trail Run
Runners gathered on September 15 at the Mary's Loop trailhead near Grand Junction to benefit the Mesa Land Trust. Darrin Eisman and Mary Gonzales ran away with wins.

Labor Day Trail Marathon on the American Discovery Trail
Ideal conditions with starting temperatures in the low 50s rising to the 70s by noon under a blue, Colorado sky watched over the 250 marathoners who ran the American Discovery Trail Marathon.

Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon
Up, up, and up...
On Saturday, August 18, Colorado's altitude running machine, Matt Carpenter, climbed to victory in the Ascent with a time of 2:16:13 over Scott Elliot of Boulder's 2:21:10. Anita Ortiz of Eagle won the women's race in 2:47:09.

On Sunday, the round-trippers raced the Marathon. Matt Carpenter showed up again to lead the way, finishing with another win, 3:53:53, for a weekend double. Boulder's Dave Mackey took the runner-up spot in 4:00:06. Erica Larson of Santa Fe claimed victory in the women's race, 4:49:19.

Team Power Completes Colorado Trail
On Sunday, July 22, three Colorado women runners began a twelve-day adventure to run the full length of the Colorado Trail. This awesome trail running feat, both a physical and mental challenge, is nothing compared to the challenges that people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease face every day. On August 4, the team completed the 480+ mile running adventure.

Vail Half Marathon
"This race is not for the timid!" proclaimed the course description for the new course on Vail Mountain, gaining 3,000 feet in 13.1 miles on July 22. Mark Werner ran to a 1:32:12 victory while triathlete Nicole DeBoom dominated the women's race with a 1:47:24 victory. Her husband Tim DeBoom, recent Ironman California champion, took third in 1:36:18.

Japanese runner who trains in Boulder, became the first woman to break the 2:20 mark by running 2:19:46 at the Berlin Marathon on September 30.

Sunny Skies at Boulder Backroads
In welcome contrast to last year's event, September 29th provided ample sunshine and a dry course for the participants in the 2nd annual Boulder Backroads Marathon and Half Marathon.

Congratulations to the 2001 Colorado Outward Bound Relay Teams
Five records were set this year as over 65 teams completed the race and rejoiced in the sunshine of Glenwood Springs on Saturday September 15. All teams had finished before noon on Saturday with the fastest time coming in under 18 hours. An ultra team set a new course record by completing the course in 20 hours.

Cool and Dry at Neder Nederland
Races started with the firing of an ancient cannon near Nederland High School on a cool, but sunny September 9th morning. From the 8,400 foot elevation start, runners gradually went up and then down to the 8,236 foot finish in Chipeta Park. Daniel Wallace and Hiroka Nomura took the men and women's 10K titles, respectively. Shannon Butler and Eliza Alexander were the 5K winners.

Labor Day Kickoff Classic 5K
An annual tradition on the CU campus in Boulder, this year's version of the 5K saw Tom Zirbel and Laurie Mizener-Edwards run to wins.

West End 3K
The Boulder Race Series finished up Thursday night, August 23, on the west end of the Pearl Street Mall with Uta Pippig and Ryan Kirkpatrick taking top honors.

Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half
Shannon Butler continued his streak by clocking a 1:10:47 victory over Daniel Hocking and Timothy Jones. Jane Welzel ran to a 1:22:48 win over Kelly Ryan and Kim Jones.

Eldorado Springs Cure
Formerly the Cancer Research Run, the annual 4 miler in Eldorado Canyon drew a large crowd Thursday evening. Overcast and rainy skies made for ideal conditions as Shannon Butler won the men's race and Mary Beth Ellis took the women's.

Wally Michel of Wheat Ridge, 31:38, and Jamie Leigh Gibbs of Arvada, 36:28, took the 10K titles.

Pearl Street Mile
Sandwiched between rain in the morning and rain later that night, the Pearl Street Mile took place under clear skies and great conditions. In a finish that went down to the wire, David Kipune from Kenya edged out local favorites to win the men's race in 4:13. Romania's Dita Constantina took the women's race in 4:51.

Women's Distance Festival
Alana Crisman and Kristyne McGuinn battled to the wire in the Women's Distance Festival 5K put on by the Pikes Peak Road Runners on July 21. Crisman prevailed over McGuinn by two seconds, running 19:20 to McGuinn's 19:22.

Mark Wetmore enters his sixth season as coach of the men and women's cross country teams with the top combined program in the country. Those honors are based on last year's finish and this year's potential. The women finished last season's NCAA championships with a long-awaited victory while the men took the runner-up spot. The men would love nothing better than to bring home a championship trophy of their own while watching the women repeat.

Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner were challenged by faster times at this year's annual cross country event at Monarch High School on Saturday, August 25.

Track World Championships 2001
The men's marathon was run in unseasonable heat and a steady wind. Josh Cox was the top American finisher. Eddy Hellebuyck was 38th and Mike Dudley finished 48th. Khalid Khannouchi and David Morris did not finish. Gezahegne Abera of Ethiopia outsprinted Simon Biwott of Kenya to win in 2:12:42. Biwott was one second back, with Stefano Baldini of Italy third in 2:13:18.

USA Track & Field Championships
Alan Culpepper qualified for worlds in the 10,000m on Thursday.

Bob Kennedy, the American record holder in the 5,000m ran from the lead, surging every other lap, and held off the likes of Olympic Trials champion Adam Goucher to win his fourth U.S. 5,000m title, his first title in the event since 1997.
Deena Drossin won her second consecutive US title at 10,000m, surging in the second 5,000m of the race to crush the field. After coming through 5k in 16:16, Drossin finished in 32:05.14 to post the fastest time by an American in 2001.

Goucher 2nd in Mile, Culpepper 3rd in 3,000m at Oregon Track Classic
Goucher ran 3:55.47 in his first race since the Olympics to finish behind Leonard Mucheru of Kenya who posted a time of 3:53.60. Culpepper ran 7:49:25 in a competitive 3,000m race that saw Luke Kipkosgei of Kenya cross the line first in 7:48.50.

ULTRAS

The 2001 Leadville 100
This year at the Leadville 100 saw 166 runners out of 392 starters finish the endurance test. Steve Peterson and Janet Runyon, both of Boulder, raced to wins by blazing ahead of competitors close on their heels.

Hardrock 100 Endurance Run 2001
July 13-15 saw the ninth running of the Hardrock. The following is a synopsis provided by the race directors: 'Karl Meltzer obliterated the course record with a new mark of 26:39. Hans Put (28:42) was also under the old record of 29:35. Betsy Kalmeyer broke her own course record with a 29:58, and was third overall. John DeWalt was the oldest finisher at 65, Todd Salzer the youngest at 27. It was generally warm, with periods of rain, thunder, and lightning. The river crossings were low, and there was very little snow on the course.'

Comrades 90K in South Africa
Mark Plaatjes of Boulder sustained an injury to his calf after getting tripped up in a crowd of runners during the famous Comrades Marathon. Andrew Kelehe of South Africa went on to win in 5:25:51, the second-fastest clocking on the course. Deb Mattheus of Evergreen placed second in the women's race with a time of 6:23:04 behind winner Elvira Kolpakova.
