Freedom Through Running Trails
Danielesque Trail Run set for September 29th as tribute
to Daniel Rosenfeld
GOLDEN, Colo. - September 4, 2001 - September 29th
will mark the inaugural running of The Danielesque Trail Run, a challenging
23 or 46 kilometer (14 and 28 mile) run at White Ranch Open Space
in Golden. The race is being held in tribute to Daniel Rosenfeld,
a local ultra athlete who had Bipolar disorder and took his own life
in October 2000.
"For only a second, I wish I could capture Daniel's
spirit, open the palm of my hand, show it to everyone, and then let
it fly away again," explains Daniel's wife and first time Race
Director Penny Rosenfeld. The essence of his spirit is captured in
the term "Danielesque." But, what is Danielesque?
Charging up some monstrous hill in the midst of a
blizzard - that's Danielesque. Putting your head down and pedaling
harder against a raging headwind - that's Danielesque. Mastering a
new sport - trail running, rock climbing, triathlons, road and mountain
biking, telemark skiing, backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding,
or climbing 14ers- in a weekend - that's Danielesque.
Daniel's list of accomplishments, at only 32 years
of age, included the Leadville Trail 100 run; Pikes Peak and Mount
Evans Ascents; and the Silicon Valley, Boston, Steamboat, and Mosquito
(Leadville Trail) Marathons. Daniel placed second the first time he
ran the Lake City 50-mile run. And, in 2000, Daniel completed the
Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, with his last five miles being
the fastest. Now that's Danielesque.
Proceeds from the race will be donated to White Ranch
Open Space and The All American Trail Running Association, which promotes
interest and standards in trail racing. While this is a low-key trail
race, where walkers are welcome, it's not a casual walk in the park.
Competition is also part of the Danielesque Trail Run. Dave Mackey
- who finished second in the 2001 Pike's Peak Marathon - as well as
ultra runner and adventurer Buzz Burrell - who holds the Colorado
Trail record - are registered for the event.
In addition to Race Director Rosenfeld, Theresa Daus-Weber
- former Leadville 100 champion who just finished her 10th Leadville
100 - as well as Adam Chase - one of Colorado's top ultra runners
- have provided technical support to the race, so it's sure to be
a safe, challenging, and rewarding trail experience. Race sponsors
include Helly Hanson, Ultima Replenisher, Cliff Bars, Runner's Choice,
and local Golden merchants.
"What I remember the most about Daniel's events
is his charming smile and good humor," says Rosenfeld. "He
found freedom through running trails. Daniel didn't just run the races,
he did it with his unquestionable zest for life." Whether you're
a serious competitor, or choose to walk the trails at White Ranch
in tribute to Daniel, do it with that same zest for life.
