Wright Continues Dominance of Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. – Jeremy Wright, of Team Beaver Creek, continued his dominance of the men’s 10K division of the Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series on February 17 with a winning time of 54 minutes, 12 seconds at Beaver Creek Resort. Charlie Wertheim placed second with a 54:25, while local legend Mike Kloser placed third in 54:56. While Kloser and Wertheim battled throughout the race, Wright led for the entire 10K quest along Beaver Creek Resort’s eastern hillside.

41 year old Kloser, a two time Eco-Challenge Champion who rode his bike to today’s race, recapped the journey: "We started out at a steady pace down to the golf course, but by the first climb Jeremy just took off. He’s a tremendous climber. Charlie and I had him in our sights the whole time. He slowed a bit at the end and I thought Charlie might get him until he went head over heels and somersaulted down the last powder section. It was pretty hilarious."

Wright commented following the race, "I had some toe problems there at the end. I got into some choppy unpacked snow and could definitely see those guys the whole way. I started to lose some footing, and they pushed me. I was psyched to see the crowd, though… the race series is starting to attract a crowd that is really serious about snowshoeing."

In the Women’s 10K division, Louisa Jenkins (1:10:45) beat out fellow Atlas teammates Tina Burghardt (1:12:09) and Lisa Been (1:12:26) to take top honors. The East West 5K Quest continued to draw the most competitors, focusing on recreational racing. Kim McConnell won the women’s 5K in 36 minutes 32 seconds, while Dan Nielson, racing for Beaver Creek Resort/Northern Lights won the men’s 5K in 30:26.

With most local & front range Vail & Beaver Creek season ski passes restricted due to President’s Day Weekend, the series drew hundreds of racers, many seeking an alternative to skiing or snowboarding. Evergreen, CO resident Doug McCormick, who participated in the Men’s 5K: "Our passes were restricted today but you just couldn’t sit around in this weather. I thought it was fun… definitely challenging, and something different to do than skiing. We’re still up here, outside, and having a ball."

Others felt the strong numbers had less to do with pass restrictions and more to do with the fact that snowshoeing is currently the fastest growing winter sport in North America. Nate Goldberg, of the Beaver Creek Nordic Center: "Beaver Creek rocks. The big thing is their support of a great team and this series. The numbers in snowshoeing and this series will continue to grow. Yeah, today’s turnout may have had some to do with the pass thing, but the following just grows and grows. I see a tremendous future in it."

The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series wraps up with its final event of the 2000-2001 season on March 10.
