BOULDER-May 20, 2001
Sunday's Downtown 3000 provided
a quick warm-up for this year's Bolder Boulder field. Natalie Davey,
fourth in last year's citizen race at the Bolder Boulder, won in a
time of 9:58. Davey was followed by Kristen Coogan in second, 10:11,
and Faith Byrum in third, 10:20. Davey will compete in next Monday's
Bolder Boulder, starting in the A wave at 7:20am.
For the men, the depth of the
field at this year's Downtown 3000 can be attested by Sam Ngatia's
fifteenth place finish in a fast race. Ngatia placed sixth in last
year's Downtown 3000 and went on to win the men's citizen race at
the Bolder Boulder.
Clint Wells, who will compete
on the USA men's elite team at next week's Bolder Boulder, blasted
the 3000-meter course for a win in record time, 8:21. The previous
course record was held by Sam Wilbur who ran 8:29 last year in the
race's first running.
Charles Wallace from Colorado
Springs took second in 8:30, followed by Peter Tanui in 8:31. Shawn
Found, who will also compete on the USA elite team next week, finished
fourth in 8:32.
Wells, a four time All-American,
and Found, a three time All-American, ran together at the University
of Colorado. They will headline a USA Bolder Boulder team that will
also include Peter de la Cerda from Alamosa. Adam Batliner, another
All-American from Colorado, was forced to withdraw from the team's
roster due to a calf injury that has kept him from training.
